    **** all with a modern desktop system.

    It would take years to pay for the drive change even if the
    system is on 24/7 and you'd be a lot better off just getting
    the system to sleep when it isnt being used, that would
    save much more if thats feasible.

    Depends on your usage pattern and the disks in question.
    Just read the datasheets of the disks.

    Sure, but that effect is swamped by the other power use of the rest of the system.

    In Australia you would save about $1 per year (9kWh) for every watt of
    reduction in power consumption, assuming your drive spun continuously
    during that time.
