Thread: USB pen drive doesn't mount

  1. USB pen drive doesn't mount

For some reason my Kingston DataTraveler DT1/1GB (http://
    www.kingston.com/flash/datatraveler.asp) doesn't mount when I insert
    it.
However, Growl recognizes it and tells me:

    USB connection
    DataTraveler 2.0

when I insert it, and the opposite when I remove it.
I also checked with System Profiler, and sure enough, this is what I
    get under the "hardware"-"USB" section:

    DataTraveler 2.0:
    Version: 1.00
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Kingston
    Product ID: 0x1a00
    Serial Number: a_number_here
    Vendor ID: 0x13fe

What could be wrong with it, and how do I get it to work properly
    again?

    NS2-

If you have Disk Utility running, does the flash drive show up there
when you plug it in? If so, you might just need to initialize it. To
ensure it can be read on other machines including Windows, I suggest you
use the "MS-DOS File System" format.

I've had a problem with some flash drives when plugged into the
Macintosh keyboard's USB socket. However there is usually an error
message that indicates insufficient power is available for the device.
The solution would be to either plug into one of the main USB ports, or
into a hub that has its own power supply.

No, there's no sign of it in Disk utility.
I've also tried it on two separate Windows machines. Same erratic type
there. No difference when plugging it via a USB hub or directly to a
    USB socket.

So I think I'll return it for a refund.
