Thread: some NB questions to get going

  1. some NB questions to get going

I installed solaris 10 and am very impressed with it.
My main OS (up till now) is FreeBSD-6.1

    I have some starter questions:

    (1) Does root have his own directory? After my install of SOL the root
    files are written in /

    (2) Were can I read about installing my own packages. I very much miss
slrn, mutt, mc for instance and want to install some basic 'tools' asa I
    can.

    (3) Is it possible to change consoles? The 'normal' key seq alt/ctl/Fx
does not seem to work ;-)

    (4) I'm used to Xorg but have no problems with the java desktop so far.
Only thing is I want international keys (like é) and can't find where to
set this up. Not like fbsd in /etc/X11/xorg.conf ;-) Where can I find
this configuration file (if it exists).

    (5) How come 'useradd' wants to create to a default /home{user} while
/home is not writable (probably ment for nfs mounts?).
The home directories are created in /exports/home. Can this be changed
    or do I give the '-d {path} everytime I create a user?

I know, lots of questions, but I think that if I get these ones answered
I can get exploring. Finding my way on the disk (now) is a little
difficult (or slow, in graphical mode).

    Hope to get some answers.

Slrn and mutt might be already installed in your system as it is in mine
    under /opt/sfw/bin.
