Thread: Xorg won't start any more

  1. Xorg won't start any more

I've just installed the latest set of patches for x86:

    113000-07 (SUNWgrub)
    119716-06 (scsi_vhci)
    120468-03 (LP)
    121082-02 (Connected Customer Agents)
    121208-02 (ld & libc.so.1)
    118844-27 (kernel)
120336-04 (Sun Update Connection Client Localization)
    120662-04 (rpcmod)
    121127-01 (unmountall.sh)

Xorg (using nvidia 1.0-7676 initially, then I upgraded to 1.0-8178) will now
    no longer start; it logs:

    (II) LoadModule: "keyboard"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module keyboard
    (II) UnloadModule: "keyboard"
(EE) Failed to load module "keyboard" (module does not exist, 0)

This same xorg.conf file worked before. The keyboard still works OK on the
    console. Argh!

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Cheers,

    Chris

Well, I backed out 118844-27 (and 121208-02 which depended on it) and am now
mostly back again. The card's only coming up in 8bpp which sucks, but that's
just a relatively minor snafu. (Any pointers to fixing it though would be
    appreciated :-)

    Cheers,

    Chris

Also sounds like the problem discussed on Yahoo Groups, Solarisx86 on
    12/27/2005. See link below:

That sounds *exactly* like the problem, thanks very much for the link!

Now the question is am I brave enough to follow the advice and remove the
nvidia entries from /etc/path_to_inst... And reboot -r :-)

    Cheers,

    Chris

It worked for me. I chose the brave way. If you look a few threads
ahead, the newer linking style is preferred. So the risky method is
preferred in my opinion. See link below:

I've done that and Xorg now starts up with the Nvidia driver. Many thanks!

It still only gives me 8bpp for some reason, but this is certainly progress.

    Cheers,

    Chris
