Thread: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

  1. Mounting USB Flash Drives?

    Hello there.

Can someone please be kind enough to explain to me on how to mount a
USB Flash Drive under Solaris 10?? I would appreciate it...

Now, how can I tell which one is my USB Flash drive under Solaris 10?

    Thanks.

  2. Re: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

Just put it in and the automounter takes care of it. It comes up under
    /rmdisk as noname

  3. Re: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

I did that a while back and I waited and waited and nothing
happened...So what directory I need to go nextime to see whether it
picked it up or not? I just went to my ROOT dorectory and see no RMDISK
in there...Does that show up when I attach the USB into my port?

  4. Re: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

There is however a "RMMOUNT" in the /usr/sbin directory, but no
    rmdisk...Im lost..

  5. Re: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

As I said: Put the USB in the port and the automounter takes care of
    it.
What version (unae -a) are you running?

  6. Re: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

I am telling you...Its not there...Even when you told me to attach the
    device?

Sometimes vold needs a nudge. As root:

    touch /etc/vold.conf; pkill -HUP vold

    (Worked for me... ;-)

  8. Re: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

should I run this command when the device is attached or what?? What
wil lthis do? Care to explain?

  9. Re: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

I tried it with the USB attached...nothing happened when I did the
    command...

    touch /etc/vold.conf; pkill -HUP vold
    #

    Hi,

I don't know if this works for flash drives, but I've been using it
recently to mount a USB hard drive that has a FAT32 partition on it
under Solaris 9 SPARC (think that something like it should work with
    Solaris X86, but not sure):

    1) First, kill Volume Manager: /etc/init.d/volmgt stop

    2) Next, I figure out where the drive is by doing an "ls -l
/dev/dsk/c*|grep storage" and look for the lines that have
"usb****storage" on them. The device name will in the form "cXt-d-s-"
    on that line.

    3) Then, I mount the drive (in this example, assume that "X" was "2":

    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0s2:c /mnt

    4) At this point, the FAT32 partition is available at /mnt.

    Hope that that helps.

    Hi,

Yes, this would need to be done with the device attached and powered on
    ..

The "touch" sets the timestamp on the vold.conf file to the current
date/time, then I think that the "pkill -HUP" sets a (software) switch
to the vold program kind of telling it to do a programmatic restart (the
"nudge" that Dave was alluding to in his post).

No luck here either...Take a look:

    Hi,

That doesn't look right. The problem is that I don't have a Solaris X86
    system. Maybe try:

    ls -l /dev/rdsk/c* | grep storage

    ??

    Hi,

I was doing some searching, and it seems like the original "ls -l"
    should have worked.

Here's a post that shows what the output from "ls -l /dev/dsk/..."
    should look like:

    http://groups.google.com/group/alt.s...756b59254b8229

    Are you sure you typed:

    ls -l /dev/dsk/c* | grep storage
    ^
    This is a "pipe" character!
    ??

    Hi,

I'm not sure. Like I said, I don't have an X86 system running.

You might start trying mounting to the different devices, e.g.,:

    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0:c /mnt

    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c3t0d0p0:c /mnt

    And see which one "takes"?

Beyond that I'm not sure what else I can suggest.

    Sorry.

    Jim

    Start here: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5093/6mkisopr2#hic
with particular attention to #s 7 and 8. It worked for me.

For this kind of stuff, docs.sun.com is always a good place to start.
(I don't always remember that myself...)

    Hi,

I just "resurrected" one of my Solaris X86 systems, and I was able to
mount a USB flash drive I had sitting around (after a couple of
attempts). In my case it was:

    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0:c /mnt

    Hope that helps.

  19. Re: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

I was playing with my USB drive and it still does not take it....What
can be possibly wrong? Heres what I did?

    # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0:c /mnt
mount: No such file or directory
    # Jan 22 09:24:47 unknown scsi: Device is gone

  20. Re: Mounting USB Flash Drives?

This means it cannot recognize the SCSI device which would be the
    USB...

    # Dec 26 16:14:07 unknown scsi: Device is gone

How can I make this thing to work please? I tried everything..
