  1. RedHat 9 and Net-SNMP: Response timeout

    Hi all

    I installed Net-SNMP 5.0.9 on my RedHat 9 PC. I configured and compiled
    it myself.
    If i do a snmpwalk locally this works perfectly:

    [root@frodo stema]# snmpwalk -v 1 -c public localhost
    SNMPv2-MIB::sysDescr.0 = STRING: Linux frodo 2.4.20-8 #1 Thu Mar 13
    17:54:28 EST 2003 i686
    SNMPv2-MIB::sysObjectID.0 = OID: NET-SNMP-MIB::netSnmpAgentOIDs.10
    SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 = Timeticks: (98708) 0:16:27.08
    SNMPv2-MIB::sysContact.0 = STRING: stema@hti-bi.bfh.ch
    .......................

    I have the same installation/configuration on my Debian Pc. There
    Net-SNMP works as well. But if i do a snmpwalk remotely on my
    RedHat PC i get a Timeout:

    smeagol:/home/stema# snmpwalk -v 1 -c public 147.87.19.40
    Timeout: No Response from 147.87.19.40

    That means that remote queries doesn't work :-( If i do
    a NMAP Scan the port 161 is reported as closed:
    smeagol:/home/stema# nmap -sU -p 161 147.87.19.40

    Starting nmap 3.45 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2003-10-22 15:22
    CEST
    Interesting ports on Ndhcp-125-23.hta-bi.bfh.ch (147.87.19.40):
    PORT STATE SERVICE
    161/udp closed snmp

    But when i do a netsat -an on my RedHat, the port appers:
    Active Internet connections (servers and established)
    Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
    tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:32768 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN

    Can somebody help me with that?

    Thanks a lot

  2. Re: RedHat 9 and Net-SNMP: Response timeout

    Hi

    This might have something to do with the firewall. You may need to check to
    be sure there is a rule that looks something like:

    ACCEPT udp ------ 147.87.19.0/24 anywhere snmp ->
    any

    I hope this helps.

  3. Re: RedHat 9 and Net-SNMP: Response timeout

    Hello

    Thanks for your help! It works now. There was a firewall running
    (lokkit) and iptables. This was the first time I installed RedHat
    so i didn't know that it installs a firewall as well.
