  1. Re: How to use examples/notification.c

snmptrapd is a trap listening daemon, and will not send traps.

    notification.c & .h will compile into a module which sends a
notification/trap (netSnmpExampleNotification is the one) twice a
minute. So with the snmptrapd running, if you then compile the
notification example into the agent (snmpd), put localhost in the
config file as a sink, and run snmpd, then your snmptrapd should get
    notifications every 30 seconds.

  3. Re: How to use examples/notification.c (2)

    Hello Dan and Mike,

"Free" support is much better than "paid" support ;-)

I'm deeply touch by your very great and prompt responses.

I gor wireshark capture SNMP successfully using command line snmptrap.

But I failed to see SNMP in wireshark after I started snmpd and waited for
    quite a while.

I guess that I have to set up snmpd.conf ??? If so, how to do it ???

Thanks so much for your help

    trapcommunity community
    trapsink hostort

...is the cheap-n-easy way to get test traps. there are similar commands for real, errr... SNMPv3 notifications - see the snmpd.conf manpage for details.

  5. Re: How to use examples/notification.c (2)

With that module compiled in, snmpd will send traps to any registered
sinks. You're correct, they're added in snmpd.conf normally.

    As noted in http://www.net-snmp.org/docs/man/snmpd.conf.html:
    trapsink HOST [COMMUNITY [PORT]]
    trap2sink HOST [COMMUNITY [PORT]]
    informsink HOST [COMMUNITY [PORT]]
will all work to add sinks, where HOST is the address of your manager,
COMMUNITY is probably public, and PORT should be omitted unless you've
    changed it from the default.

  6. Re: How to use examples/notification.c (3)

    Hello,

What I am trying to do is to send out SNMP trap from an embedded linux
target for alarming purpose in case HW failure. So I see the notification.c
    is the best candidate.

I also wish to have the target respond to SNMP query.

    Therefore, I'm thinking there're 2 ways
    1) a) Run snmptrapd for query
    b) Compile notification.c as a stand-alone app and run it to send SNMP
    trap
So, I'm really appreciated to your help of how to do b)
    2) The notification.c is "embed" into snmptrapd so I run only 1 task for
    both

Job 1.b) could be simpler in creating a Makefile ? but 2) is simnpler in
operation as 1 task does both jobs (sending out and responding to query)

I really appreciate to your time and help

    Duy

Note that host is now HOST:PORT and the PORT argument is obsolete. The doc needs updating. Maybe I'll get ambitious this weekend...

    [SNIP/]

Neither method you suggested will work. To get a quesry response, you MUST use snmpd. Since you're working on embedded Linux, I suggest you search this list for "embedded linux", which will give you some tips, including the fact that things may get a little painful.

Neither method you suggested will work. To get a quesry response, you MUST
use snmpd. Since you're working on embedded Linux, I suggest you search
this list for "embedded linux", which will give you some tips, including the
fact that things may get a little painful.

No. It can only receive traps and acknowledge informs. Any query response requires snmpd.
