Hello list,

A few months ago I posted a question bout snmpd and the DFE-580TX
network card (see under). The problem was solved with thee 2.6.25
kernel. From the changelog:

################################################## ####################
sundance: SIOCDEVPRIVATE pollution

To quote one of my favorite contemporary author:
[include/linux/sockios.h]
/* THESE IOCTLS ARE _DEPRECATED_ AND WILL DISAPPEAR IN 2.5.X
-DaveM */

#define SIOCDEVPRIVATE 0x89F0 /* to 89FF */

[...]

Gentoo's snmpd trips up over this code when trying to figure if the
driver supports the non-SIOCDEVPRIVATE API or not. One can argue over
its choice of heuristic but there no reason to make ioctl more ugly than
needed.

I post this to the list for future googlers. I received quite a lot of
mails asking if I had found a solution for this problem. Well, there is
one now ;-)

Richard.

I use a quad ethernet card D-Link DFE-580TX in my server. As soon as I
start snmpd I get this in syslog:

kernel: 00 39d52000 00000000 00000000(00) 00000000 00000000
[snip bunch of messages like above]
kernel: TxListPtr=39d00150 netif_queue_stopped=0
kernel: cur_tx=3126(16) dirty_tx=3126(16)
kernel: cur_rx=20 dirty_rx=20
kernel: cur_task=3126
kernel: TxStatus=1500
[snip]
kernel: 1f 39d071f0 00000000 00000000(00) 00000000 00000000
kernel: TxListPtr=00000000 netif_queue_stopped=0
kernel: cur_tx=0(00) dirty_tx=0(00)
kernel: cur_rx=0 dirty_rx=0 Dec 18 10:47:09
kernel: cur_task=0
kernel: TxStatus=0000

snmpd listens on 127.0.0.1. Distro is Debian Etch. The machine
has an unpatched vanilla kernel 2.6.23.11 (2.6.23.9 has the same
problem). These are the start options:

'-Lsd -Lf /dev/null -u snmp -I -smux -p /var/run/snmpd.pid 127.0.0.1'

This is what I get in syslog when snmpd starts:

snmpd[4843]: could not open /proc/net/if_inet6
snmpd[4843]: cache has existing timer id. Dec 18 10:46:40
snmpd[4843]: NET-SNMP version 5.2.3

Anyone a hint? Maybe this is not an snmpd problem at all, but I have to
start somewhere...
