slow copy/write inside same samba share
Copying a 300 Mb directory with lotsa files inside the same samba share
takes very very long. The samba version is 3.0.22.
As there's a couple of pc's who are still win xp 'home edition' and
not professional, domain login mode won't work for these. Inside smb.conf
domain logins is consequently disabled. Is there a speed penalty with
samba 3.0.2x when running in workgroup mode instead of domain logins ,
when using windows xp sp2 clients?
The problem becomes overly nastry when connecting to the samba share with
VPN over the internet. Making a Copy of that same 300 MB directory inside
the same samba share then takes up over 174 minutes. Previously, Windows
network printing using samba had also been disabled, because the Windows
XP SP2 network printing client took to much time probing printers
connected through VPN. All this 'traffic' has been disabled, by enforcing
printing through VPN to be handled exclusively by cups.
So whats going on with samba these days? Samba has become a very nasty
beast for me, when its clients are Windows XP SP2 and higher.
I speak here typically of DELL PC's with their factory installed DELL OEM-ED
version of Windows XP.

Re: slow copy/write inside same samba share
Hello again,
Well what a gas, forget the below story, as the driver settings of
the Broadcom onboard ethernet card were totally screwed up inside
Windows XP SP2. After doing some basic ftp tests from cmd.exe
it turned out that this 100/1000 Mbit ethernet device could not
reach beyond 35 kbytes/sec when downloading a file with ftp
from the samba server.
So maybe insert into the Samba debug manuals as debug question on
page 1 :
"0. Did you test your network speed with ftp?"
Cheers,
Robert

My favorite cause for that sort of slowness has always been a mixed up
duplex setting, where one part was in half duplex mode and another
part was in full duplex mode. Similarly annoying ...

Seems like a good idea.
