    I downloaded Samba 3.0 on Redhat 9.0 running on a P4 2.4Ghz, 512MB DDR

    Done configure. make, make install and ended up with a binary tree equating
    to over 300MB in siz e.g smbpasswd is 20MB

    Is this correct or is there something wrong in he compile process on Redhat
    9.0

    Any ideas?

    I would assume that you did build executable containing debug information.
    Atleas you should use strip to remove them.
