Thread: Font problem attempting startx

  1. Font problem attempting startx

Although Slax 6.0.7 has no problem starting a KDE session from a command
prompt ("startx"), I'm getting an error I can't solve when I attempt to
    startx (TWM or KDE).

This is a fresh install of 12.1 on an HP Pavilion dv4217c1 laptop.
Except for a few things like Xeyes and the obviously Asian fonts,
    everything in slackware/x was installed.

(Wouldn't it be helpful if the .txt files contained something other than
    blah: blah
    blah:
blah: blah is part of X11.
    blah:
blah: For more information about the X.Org Foundation (the providers of
    the
blah: X.Org implementation of the X Window System), see their website:
    blah:
    blah: http://www.x.org)

The last few lines of Xorg.0.log are:
    (**) Option "CustomKeycodes" "off"
    (**) Keyboard1: CustomKeycodes disabled
    (II) evaluating device (Keyboard1)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard1" (type: KEYBOARD)
    (II) evaluating device (Mouse1)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse1" (type: MOUSE)
    (II) Mouse1: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded

    Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

I googled aols looking for the above error message but came up blank, and
google.com/linux says lots of other distros exhibit this problem, but I
sure couldn't find any solution (or even an intelligent posting).

Assistance | pointers | solution, PLEASE.

The fixed fonts comes in the package font-misc-misc-1.0.0-noarch-3.tgz

This area is designed to become quite warm during normal operation.

If font-misc-misc-1.0.0-noarch-3.tgz is already installed, I believe you
can clear up the problem by rerunning some of the setup scripts found in
    /var/log/setup/

As root, try running "setup.04.mkfontdir" and "setup.05.fontconfig"

    # /var/log/setup/setup.04.mkfontdir
    # /var/log/setup/setup.05.fontconfig

You could give it a try.

You also need the font-alias package.

Leaving the above intact for posterity.

The scripts did not create new fonts.dir and fonts.scale in
/usr/share/fonts/misc so I renamed these files and copied these 2 from
    Slax:
    root@hp:/usr/share/fonts/misc# cat fonts.dir
    2
    7x14.pcf.gz fixed
    cursor.pcf.gz cursor

    root@hp:/usr/share/fonts/misc# cat fonts.scale
    0

which works around my problem. Because it was not possible to see that
the 04 and 05 scripts were working, I typed the mkfontscale and mkfontdir
commands from the command line. This created new fonts.scale, fonts.dir
and encodings.dir files in ~/fonts/misc but startx subsequently failed
with the same "fixed" error. So for now the Slax files will have to do.

BINGO. I wonder how the heck that pkg got skipped, but it was.

    Thank you so much.
