    Bug:
    http://www.fauxascii.com/linux/data/...s-all-1.15.tgz
    is fine but
    http://www.fauxascii.com/linux/data/...l-1.15.tgz.md5
for some reason causes Apache to look for a randomly generated file
name that doesn't exist. The file name looks like /tmp/t9ufg886.md5
with the t9ufg886 changing each time. So here is the MD5 for
    1.15.tgz: 8fbf56ffc9ebceda518f02b3a8d0e55e
There is no redirect that would acount for this error.

wget has no problem with that link, firefox displays the behaviour you
describe, and IE6 retrieves the file, but somehow changes the extension
from md5 to tar. Maybe this will give you a clue as to where the
    problem could lie.

Those statistics are skewed, when I was compiling the fortune mod, I
attributed quotes by prefixing the name with -- instead of From:, and I
think Faux_Pseudo did one or two like that also.

Oh, one other think, the slack-fortunes-vol-1.md5 file contained
therein claims its md5sums are for slack-fortunes-all-1.15.tar.gz and
it's md5sum file. Which is obviously wrong, but the keys also don't

Hmmmm.... this is what I get:

    67 +alan hicks+
    64 faux_pseudo
    45 +chiron+

even when using your query, could you look at what is matched by
    /usr/share/games/fortunes/slack/slack-fortunes-vol-[0-9]*, maybe one or
two got renamed and ended up double?

Yes, you spotted the very problem, sorry, someone might have been
using vim or something that horrible instead of elvis as I found
two text files with extension .nn~ , eeek ! ;-)

Apache seems to be sending the right file but with the wrong MIME type,
application/x-tar, whereas it should bet text/plain. wget doesn't care
about the MIME type, and I don't know why it causes Firefox to choke so
    badly.

Is Apache trying to generate the MD5 sums on the fly? Or perhaps
compressing or uncompressing on the fly? I see the same as Q reported:
the content encoding is x-gzip, but the Content-Type is app/x-tar.

One of the largest sources of the "quotes" thanks the troll for

    Unbelievable. But there it is.

Vol 1 was done like that. I have thought about fixing it but figured
that those to whom it mattered had already fixed it on their end and
didn't want to break backwards compatability with what was already

I actually prefer '--', from a purely esthetical viewpoint. That's why
    I did them that way.
