  1. PANIC: kern_malloc: invalid size -- 67742992 IRIX 6.2

    Hi all,

    I have an Indy R5000 150MHz machine with 32MB RAM
    on which I want to install IRIX 6.2.
    I have tried to install the system onto the following disks :
    1st try: Seagate ST32155W (2GB)
    2nd try: Seagate ST136403LC (36GB)
    with no success at all.
    I am following the install documents provided by SGI :

    SCSI DISK ID# 2 (root disk)
    CDROM ID# 5

    >> boot -f dksc(0,5,8)sashARCS
    >> boot -f dksc(0,5,7)/stand/fx.ARCS

    device dksc
    ctlr# 0
    drive# 2
    r
    ro
    xfs yes
    re
    swap
    200
    use the partition layout ? yes
    ...
    exit

    Then I choose option 2 from the Menu :

    2) Install System Software

    I am getting the following error using the ST32155W :

    1) Remote Tape 2) Remote Directory 3)[Local CD-ROM] 4) Local Tape
    *a) Local SCSI CD-ROM drive 5

    Enter 1-4 to select source type, a to select the source, to quit,
    or to start:

    Insert the installation CD-ROM, then press :

    Copying installation program to disk.

    PANIC: kern_malloc: invalid size -- 67742992

    If I change the disk to ST136403LC I get the same error.

    The install software does not let me go further, install gets stuck.
    Would anyone provide any help on this matter ?

    Thanks in advance,
    Luiz Regis

    You are sure the SCSI bus is terminated correct on both sides (internal
    and CDROM)?

  3. Re: PANIC: kern_malloc: invalid size -- 67742992 IRIX 6.2

    Hi Toni,

    Yes, scsi bus has a FPT-18 Active Terminator at the end of the external
    bus.
    It is a 50-pin centronics plug.
    I have other active terminators that I can replace and give it try.

    You might want to check that you have the correct version of 6.2 for your
    hardware.

    Hi Toni,

    I changed the terminator at the bus end and no luck,
    same error.
    Could it be something related to RAM ?
    I have 2 sets of RAM.

    Hm, usually the IP24 of the Indy is reported as IP22 by 'hinv'. Are
    there really different versions of 6.2 for different hardware? How many
    memory is necessary for 6.2?

    Yes, there are different versions of 6.2. The CD set should be labeled to
    indicate which hardware it supports.

    32 megs of RAM should be fine for installing 6.2.

  9. Re: PANIC: kern_malloc: invalid size -- 67742992 IRIX 6.2

    Here are the versions:

    CD#1
    Silicon Graphics Software Release 6.2 2792137

    more .IM
    id = "29"

    # Please do NOT delete this file!
    # This file serves to uniquely identify this CD

    version = "1"
    title = "IRIX 6.2 (PART 1 OF 2)"
    part_num = "812-0469-001"
    sub_id = "0"

    CD#2
    Silicon Graphics Software Release 6.2 2792133

    more .IM
    id = "23"

    # Please do NOT delete this file!
    # This file serves to uniquely identify this CD

    title = "IRIX 6.2 (Part 2 of 2)"
    part_num = "812-0470-001"
    sub_id = "0"

    I tried reformatting by using "auto" on fx.ARCS followed by 2) Install.
    However the error remains:

    Insert the installation CD-ROM, then press :

    Copying installation program to disk.

    Hm, probably the internal SCSI terminator, external cable, SCSI cable in
    CDROM case or (very bad) broken installation media.

    This machine is more and more sounding like either a hosed system
    board,
    or a case of connector corrosion. Give reseating every connector a
    try.

    if these odd errors still appear, I'm in agreement with Tony on broken

  14. Re: PANIC: kern_malloc: invalid size -- 67742992 IRIX 6.2

    I decided to repeat the install not using the serial console.
    I set up the environment console to G .
    The panic bus error keeps showing up.
    However, when I tried to run Diagnostic, prom complains
    that ide.IP22 is missing:

    Autoboot failed
    scsi(0)cdrom(5)part(7)/stand/ide.IP22 no such file or directory

    I realize that unix.IP22 is also placed in the wrong cdrom directory
    dksc(0,5,7)/dist/miniroot/unix.IP22 not in /stand directory.

    After preparing system disk using prom fx only sgilabel is shown
    in dksc(0,2,8) volume header. It should contain also the sashARCS
    program. Why hasn't sashARCS been copied there during the install ?

    Does anyone provide the Irix 6.2 foundation 1 and 2 cdrom structure,
    that is, contents and directories ?
    My cd set could be somehow broken.
    How is it possible ?

    thanks,
    Luiz

  15. Re: PANIC: kern_malloc: invalid size -- 67742992 IRIX 6.2

    Hi,

    I disassembled the entire machine and checked all the connectors.
    No connector corrosion is seen. I cleaned all the dust and reassembled
    all the parts but no luck. I am still getting the infamous kern_malloc
    error.
    When I change the memory set I get a panic bus error. It seems that
    problem is somehow related to memory. I have to find a new set of SIMMs

    for the next try. I need also a new set of Irix 6.2 cds for the final
    try.
    Luckily I will find them on eBay.

    Make sure your SIMMs are of the proper spec, matched, and installed in the
    correct bank.

    They need to be Parity (36-bit), FPM (not EDO), 60 or 70ns, and installed in
    matched sets of 4.

    sash and ide are copied to the vh during OS install. fx doesn't do
    that.
