  1. SGI Altix 330

    Dear all,

    Kindly help on the following:

    This is with reference to
    http://www.sgi.com/products/servers/...0/configs.html

"Node size (single operating system image): 1 - 16 CPU"

    - What does Single Operating System Image (SOSI) mean?

Suppose there are 3 x 1U of Altix 330, with SOSI, does that mean only 1
    OS will be installed?

If there are 2 x Itanium2 CPU with 2 GB memory on each 1U of Altix 330,
thus total of 6 x Itanium2 CPU with 6GB of memory, with SOSI, will the
OS report 6 CPU (via and 6GB of memory via command "top" or
    /proc/cpuinfo ?

    Many thanks in advance.

It means the combined system acts as a single computer, running one memory
space, one kernel, etc as if it were just a regular multi-cpu computer.

Just a single OS - one set of bits that run everything.
The alternative to this is a cluster which has multiple
operating system images, each running some subset of cpus.

Yes. And you might configure this with a single disk, if you wanted.

Yes. You get a single OS running on up to 16 cpus with a single
glob of memory that is usable by any and all cpus.
