Thread: O2 upgrading info

  1. O2 upgrading info

    Ciao!

    I've an O2 R5000-200 with 6.5.0 and I'm trying to upgrade to 6.5.20m
    with no luck.
    I've downloaded the three cds from support.sgi.com, untarred on my
    FreeBSD 5.2 box and enabled bootp/tftp on it.

    In the O2 maintenance menu I select 'Install system software', from
    'Remote directory' and start installation. It says:

    Copying installation tools to disk

    it loads from network and then it appears the following message:

    Cannot load network(0)bootp()server:/path/to/miniroot/unix.IP32.
    Illegal f_magic number 0xaced, expected MIPSELMAGIC or MIPSEBMAGIC.
    [...]
    PANIC: Unexpected exception

    or sometimes this:

    Cannot load network(0)bootp()server:/path/to/miniroot/unix.IP32.
    Illegal f_magic number 0xaced, expected MIPSELMAGIC or MIPSEBMAGIC.
    Unable to execute network(0)bootp()server:/path/to/miniroot/unix.IP32:
    execute format error
    Unable to load network(0)bootp()server:/path/to/miniroot/unix.IP32:
    execute format error
    Failed to boot

    bootp log from the FreeBSD box show that it loads '/path/to/sa' and
    '/path/to/miniroot/unix.IP32'

    I've searched in the IRIX Admin: Software installation and license, in
    the news archive but actually I haven't got a solution.

    I've tried to bootp sa(sashARCS) and then unix.IP32 through the
    command monitor but it panics the same way.

    Is there something I could try?

    > version

    PROM Monitor (BE)
    VERSION 4.8
    O2 R5000/R10000
    IRIX 6.3 IP32prom IP32PROM-v4

    Thanks in advance.

    Ciao
    Mirko

    Set up a user guest (without a password) on the FreeBSD box with pdksh
    as its login shell and do a live install from a running 6.5.0 system on
    the O2 (using swmgr):

    # swmgr -f guest@ip.freebsd.box:/path/to/overlay/dir/

    Maybe you have to install patch 5086 before you begin (or was 5086 only
    needed for .21 and up?) and even restart swmgr (because that one gets
    replaced with the patch).
