  1. Can I put /usr on 2nd HD?

What directories can be safely put on a 2nd HD and not interfere with the

Provided that you configure the second HD (or second partition) to
mount automatically via /etc/fstab, then you can put all of /usr
    on it.

As I recall, if you do a clean install into a split root/usr disk,
then there is a link installed into /usr before the second disk
is mounted, with the effect that the link is only active if the
/usr drive has not yet been mounted [e.g., in single user mode.]
I do not recall exactly what the link is to; I think it might
    point /usr/lib to /lib .

    We were running without problems:

    File /etc/fstab:
    /dev/root / efs rw,raw=/dev/rroot 0 0
    /dev/dsk/lv0 /usr efs rw,raw=/dev/rdsk/lv0 0 0

    Filesystem size and usage:
Filesystem Type kbytes use avail %use iuse ifree %iuse Mounted
    /dev/root efs 15592 9413 6179 60% 1302 3016 30% /
    /dev/dsk/lv0 efs 2288160 2160147 128013 94% 32906 450932 7% /usr

The poster did not indicate what version of IRIX he uses
so I choose to be on the safe side ...
