  1. Serious Serial Console Madness

I have been frustratingly trying to get a functioning login via serial
console for a couple of days now, and I feel like I have read every
doc/tutorial/howto and followed every possible instruction.

Initially I was trying to install Etch over a serial console with a
self built netboot CD. I managed to get the the ISOLinux prompt and
the kernel messages on my serial console, but not the debian-
installer. In the end I gave up and installed via preseed & ssh-
console, but I now I am up and running, I am determined to master the
    serial console.

I am however in a similar position whereas I can quite happily get my
GRUB menu and kernel messages on my console, I cannot seem to get
login. I have getty listening on my serial port, but it just does not
present a login when the boot finishes:

    Here are my config files:

    ### /boot/grub/menu.lst ###

    default 0
    timeout 5
    color cyan/blue white/blue

    serial --unit=0 --speed=9600 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1

Any help would be mucho appreciated.

the serial consol need to be compiled into the kernel, look at the
    options while compiling.
