Newer kernel on SuSE 10.2
Hi All,
Old computer blew up. Rather than fix it I thought it was about time I
got a new one (which I did) nice shiny HP m7000 media center, AMD64x2.
After a bit of fight I get OpenSuse 10.2 running on it (after
disabling PnP in the BIOS and ACPI in the kernel). Its OK, but I miss
telling it to switch off and walk away instead of waiting for it to
tell me to press the power button. Oh yes, and remarkably - I've got a
machine that should be about 10x more powerful than my previous box
and Yast takes EVEN LONGER to start. Nearly everthing else works well
though.
Booting up with a LiveCD version of Vector-Linux - everything works
fine too - I also get drivers working for the USB-to_IDE adaptor I
bought to migrate my old data (which wouldn't work with SuSE 10.2) -
this has 2.6.20 rather than 2.6.18. So thinks I, this is openSuSe
surely I can upgrade the kernel?
A quick google turned up this thread:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/alt.os.linux.suse/browse_thread/thread/f1ef4c5b7484db30/a6b74bea3eb023d2?hl=en&lnk=st&q=opensuse+10.2+kernel+upgrade#a6b74bea3eb023d2
but using the rpms from http://software.opensuse.org/download/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_Factory/
I get:
colin@kernit:~/download/kernel-try1> rpm -U --test kernel-
kdump-2.6.22_rc4_git3-40.1.x86_64.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
apparmor-profiles <= 2.0.1 conflicts with kernel-
kdump-2.6.22_rc4_git3-40.1.x86_64
apparmor-parser <= 2.0.1 conflicts with kernel-
kdump-2.6.22_rc4_git3-40.1.x86_64
(and there's no apparmor rpms in this repository)
So in ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-jengelh/SUSE-10.2/x86_64/
I find
apparmor-docs-2.0.2-39.ccj0.x86_64.rpm
apparmor-parser-2.0.2-39.ccj0.x86_64.rpm
kernel-default-2.6.22.9-ccj54.x86_64.rpm
But no apparmor-parser, and sure as fate:
colin@kernit:~/download/kernel-try2> rpm -U --test *.rpm
warning: apparmor-docs-2.0.2-39.ccj0.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA

(and adding either as an installation source didn't cause a new kernel
to appear in the list of available software).
One of the reasons I liked SuSe (and linux for that matter) is that it
just worked - but no more?
Time to stop ranting.
How do I get a new kernel on my machine?
WTF is ZenWorks and ZMD - it won't stop and uses enough CPU time to
fry eggs on my PC?
Where is my medication!!!!!?????

Whoops, and didn't mean to post this here - sorry!

Yast overall or the software-update part of it? If the latter, then
it'll be the zmd you appropriately curse later in the message.

Well, are you using apparmor for something? If not, just drop the
apparmor rpms and update the kernel.

I got tired of this same today, and found the following helpful
article:
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:How_to_remove_ZMD_in_openSUSE_10.2
.... no more zmd chewing my CPU.
