    If the lines that you want to modify will reliably look like that
    (varname='value'), you could use:

    awk "/^[a-zA-Z0-9]+='.*'$/{gsub(/'/,x);sub(\"=\",\"='\");sub(/$/,\"'\")}1"

    This will get rid of any apostrophes except immediately after varname= and at
    the end of the line.

    I finally got it working (half-ass for now) by combining some of the code
    emailed to me as examples. I've got to get this one project out the door
