    I just downloaded it from
    http://www.sco.com/support/ftplists/osr5list.html and had no issue
    with it. It is indeed a cpio archive.

    From where (and using what method) are you downloading it?

    You'll have to be a bit more specific - I just downloaded
    ftp.sco.com//pub/openserver5/oss660a with WS-FTP via Windows XP and it
    is indeed a cpio archive.

    actually I downloaded by ftp using a windows ftp program , ftp
    transfer mode was set to auto , and when that did not seem to work I
    set ftp transfer mode to binary , I passed the files to the unix box
    using the sco vision

    No way.

    BIN (image) mode is required for non-text files. Only the text portions
    of the custom cpio image will *seem* to transfer correctly - but will
    have extra CR's inserted.

    Custom images combine text and the binary payload.

    I downloaded it in binary mode using WS-FTP LE v5.06. Also via OSR
    5.0.6 in binary mode. I would say your FTP client is broken.
