  1. Psion 3a 3Link printer cable to usb printer

    Hi
Is it possible to print directly from my recently acquired Psion 3a by
connecting it to a USB only printer? (Canon i350). If yes, what kind of
adapter should I buy? I have a Psion 3 Link Parallel Printer Interface
    cable.
Also, how does it work printing from a Psion? Is it done through Windows? Do
you have to put some kind of Printer Driver onto the Psion?

    Thanks
    Evi

    Sorry, can't be done

    If yes, what kind of

If you have a 3a, you need the "soap on a rope" style connector, with
the odd pod in the middle. Then using PsiWin 2.3.3 (available on the
net in various places - try www.pscience.net first) you can print to the
    printer through windows.

    Sorry, that should be www.pscience5.net

With the parallel cable it is direct from Psion to printer.
Printing needs power so it is best to have a mains connected.

The 3a comes with a number of printer drivers including a general
printer driver(like generic/text only in Windows).

Find the printer option on the control menu in the system screen.

Find the print setup option on the special menu of an application that
supports printing. eg. word, sheet, data, agenda

OP might need to be told that you can only use a printer directly
if it's of the "DOS printer" variety that, eg, prints an "A" when
you send it byte value 65.

Thanks for the info, everyone, it makes sense now. I don't think my printer
will qualify as a Dos printer but at lease I can print via Windows (once I
can Ebay a 'soap on the rope' lead).

EBCDIC printer? I did not think of such with a USB port.
Then again the OP said "USB only printer" so...
parallel 3Link useless in this instance.

He will need a 3Link and PsiWin to transfer / print through his PC.

But that would require a printer with parallel port, not USB. Never heard of
a parallel-to-USB adaptor. The "S" of USB means serial, after all...

Though there are utilities to help in constructing printer drivers. It is a
rather specialised process, though! I built one, once, purely to do the
right line breaks for the system font, to assist with contructing Psion Help
    files. (See http://www.mjcoon.connectfree.co.uk/page15.htm if sufficiently
intrigued.) So there was no actual printer involved, just a load of font
metrics. (I said it was specialised!)

Both employ the shortcut Psion-Y (just to prove I have my trusty 3A to
hand). But this is going to be of no help without some matching hardware.
And printing through Windows isn't going to be possible either without a
serial cable ("soap-on-a-rope") to connect the Psion to a PC!

    Cheers, Mike.
