Possible Linux newbie wants some answers!

I must admit that I don't know an awful lot about Linux but I'm
intending to buy a (very, very, very and a few others) cheap PC and I
was wondering quite how different the Linux experience is?

I'm used to Windows and to a lesser extent MacOs but I was looking for
a dirt cheap alternative and Linux is free!

I'm quite technically minded and I really need a new PC soon and I
really want to know if it is practical to use Linux temporarily and
move over to (probably keep both) Windows.
