I agree with the first comment. I'd like to see the shutdown ability handled
by ftpdctl, and ftpdctl to be useful for both (x)inetd/standalone.

No. I'd already moved the shutdown file into /etc/proftpd on my installs.
Actually, I'd like to see a move toward moving things out of /etc/ and into a
dedicated /etc/proftpd/, which is what some Linux distros are doing as well.
