Thanks for your reply...

Found another strange problem.. If I was starting it with proftpd -dn5 it
was starting fine and I was able to do ftp transactions.. Only it was not
starting from the init.d startup script...

I again configued it with the option --prefix=/usr --with modules=.......

and make install

now it runs fine and the problem solved !!!

Dont know what was the problem with permission issues.....
