I've no problem to handle spaces:

proftpd.conf:

LogFormat upload_only "%m %f"
ExtendedLog /var/log/uploads.fifo WRITE upload_only

The FIFO receive lines such:

STOR foo.txt
APPE bar.jpg
STOR file with some spaces.txt

The daemon parse the lines via in infinite loop and extract file names:

$line = ~s/^(STOR|APPE) (.*)/\2/;
