  1. fedora 1 and error 8 with PPP

    Guys
i just can't get it to work. I have configured my PPP connection as per
instructions in Chris Negus's Red hat Linux Bible. His instructions are
consistent with those on the Red hat site. However, when I try to
    connect I get the following:

Failed to activate optus1 with error 8

    (Optus1 is my service providor)

My Modem's working so it can't be that (see below). What's happening?
    please help....

    Try

    cd /dev
    ln -sf ttyS0 modem

This may or may not work. I don't use obfuscating pppd front ends such
    as wvdial.

Assuming that "error 8" refers to the exit value from pppd, that's
described in the pppd man page as:

8 The connect script failed (returned a non-zero exit
    status).

.... meaning that the chat script is failing.

At a guess, I'd say that you're getting stuck because of wvdial's
penchant for attempting to do a scripted login before running PPP, and
that "Stupid Mode" needs to be enabled.
