Boot via USB or Firewaire

Is it possible to install to and boot from a USB/Firewire Hard Drive?
Is it possible to do without any modifications to the existing inernal
HD? I have no particular distro preference.

I'm using a G4 eMac, and Mac OS X 10.4.3.
