installing Debian on iBook G4 - no /dev/hda
Hi,
I'm trying to install Debian on an iBook G4, HD is 30GB, 640MBs of RAM.
I split the HD into 2 pieces and installed OSX on the second one.
When I start yaboot with "boot hd:4,yaboot" I get the following message
right before the boot prompt.
WARNING: Bootstrap partition type is wrong: "Apple_HFS"
type should be: "Apple_Bootstrap"
By pressing Enter I can now start the Debian installer. But when it comes to
"mac-fdisk -l" there is no output and for "mac-fdisk -l /dev/hda" there
comes "mac-fdisk: can't open file '/dev/hda' (No medium found)".
Under OSX a "pdisk /dev/rdisk0 -dump" shows this:
/dev/rdisk0 map block size=512
#: type name length base ( size )
1: Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1
2: Apple_Free 29302592 @ 64 ( 14.0G)
3: Apple_Free 0+@ 29302656
4: Apple_HFS Apple_HFS_Untitled_3 29040304 @ 29564800 ( 13.8G)
5: Apple_Free 0+@ 58605104
Device block size=512, Number of Blocks=58605120
DeviceType=0x0, DeviceID=0x0
I'm not a Linux newbie, but a macintosh one...
Does any one have any suggestions?

Try mac-fdisk -l without a disk designation--on my desktop G4
the first IDE disk was recognized as /dev/hde. I've heard
other problems with the G4 iBooks and linux recognizing the
hard disk, but nothing specific.

Well, "mac-fdisk -l" does not output anything at all.
I found out, when booting a YDL CD, that the hd geometry seems to be
58140,16,63. I tried "install hda=58140,16,63" on the boot prompt, but: no
change...

[solved] installing Debian on iBook G4 - no /dev/hda
Peer Klein wrote:
In http://valla.uchicago.edu/ppc/vmlinux-pbg412.bz2 there is a linux.bin
that can talk with the iBook's ATA100 controller. The problem is that
"normal" powerpc-debian kernels cannot use the ATA100 controller...
Next problem and I'm back here :-)

You might simply need a newer kernel which "knows" the newer mainboard
to perform the install, try .

I had a similar issue on an iMac 233. I solved the problem by removing
the jumper "shunt"; check your hard drive jumper settings!
