My guess is "both". I've been unsuccessful in my attempts to
make linux span or mirror to the LCD and an external display.
Sometimes, I can get linux to display to the external port only
(then, the LCD stays white) by booting with the cover mostly
closed.

Check the google archives of this group for more info--we've
discussed this issue a few times in the past.
