I don't think the screen will be a problem, though personally I'd go for the
NVidia graphics option for Linux, but people are only just getting the other
bits to fully work with Linux. See Graham Wilford's page on this:
http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/.../Inspiron8500/

You should get something working with SuSE 8.2 anyway.

Please note that using information on this page and some other patches
available at http://www.gotontheinter.net/kernel/, I managed to install
Debian 3 and RedHat 9 on the i8500 without any problem.
