if you have gnupg, you can make an armored signed file,
transmit it as text, verify the signature, and once verified,
save it as the original file form

using an armored signed file saves both the receiver and sender
from headaches in sending and tracking down the detached signatures
for the files

for example,

assume that your file is named 'f1' with an extension type of '.xyz'
and that your key is called 'vp1'

then,

to sign the file and have a .txt file of the (file + signature)
ready for sending, you could use the following command:

gpg -u vp1 --output f1.xyz.txt -a -s f1.xyz

upon receipt of the file f1.xyz.txt
the recipient simply types:

gpg f1.xyz.txt

gnupg will then verify the signature,
and give the following message:

gpg: original file name='f1.xyz'
gpg: f1.xyz.txt: unknown suffix
Enter new filename [f1.xyz]:

at this point,
simply enter the same original filename:

f1.xyz

and it will be saved on the receiving end

keeping the original filename and extension f1.xyz
and then making the signed output f1.xyz.txt

will have gnupg tell the receiver what the original filename was
and prompt to save it

[n.b. am not sure what the size is,
but think that there is some upper limit for gnupg
to make ascii .txt files this way,

if there is no such limit,
or if someone knows the exact size limit, please post,]
