gpg: Can't check signature: public key not found - PGP

This is a discussion on gpg: Can't check signature: public key not found - PGP ; I'm new to the signature checking thing. I added to /usr/share/gnupg/options.skel keyserver wwwkeys.pgp.net keyserver-options auto-key-retrieve but still get gunzip -c sendmail.8.12.10.tar.gz|gpg --verify sendmail.8.12.10.tar.gz.sig - gpg: Signature made Wed 17 Sep 2003 08:17:12 AM PDT using RSA key ID 396F0789 gpg: ...

    I'm new to the signature checking thing.

    I added to /usr/share/gnupg/options.skel

    keyserver wwwkeys.pgp.net
    keyserver-options auto-key-retrieve

    but still get

    /usr/share/gnupg/options.skel is used to create a gpg.conf file when a
    user uses GnuPG for the first time (it's the SKELeton of a config file).

    You probably meant to modify your ~/.gpg/gpg.conf file.
