  1. Palm T|X Issues

I've already posted about my missing Documents to Go, which
was caused by a combination of a problem with the old DTG
installation on my desktop and the fact that the DTG
installation script runs "silently" without any success or
error messages - but has been fixed; and the high temp
problem with the AC adapter, which is on its way to being
fixed, so let me list a few other minor issues - none so
serious as to cause me to regret buying the T|X.

I had a Tungsten C with a real keyboard and also used the
on-screen keyboard on my Tungsten E, so the I assumed that
lack of a keyboard on the T|X was not going to be a serious
problem - especially since I purchased the wireless keyboard
accessory for any serious writing. However, I am a bit
unhappy that some designer took the very nice high
visibility on-screen keyboard from the Tungsten E and made a
new, perhaps in his or her opinion but not mine, more
stylish on-screen keyboard for the T|X that has much lower
contrast, seems to have smeller "keys" and doesn't make that
reassuring click when I tap on the keys. I do wish I could
change the keyboard color scheme and also restore the click.

The DUN has been improved somewhat, but when I choose the
Universal Phone Dialer for my Bluetooth enabled cell phone
there is no place to enter the modem init strings! When
using this driver the phone works as a modem for the T|X but
only in slow speed. To get the phone into 1x mode I had to
choose the GSM driver for my Verizon/Nokia 6256i CMDA phone
and then test various models of Nokia phones since only
older phones are listed. Once I found a compatible driver I
could add the modem init strings necessary to put the phone
in 1x mode. It would have been nice if Palm had included
the modem init option with the standard phone driver and
also provided drivers for some of the newer Bluetooth
    phones.

When I operate WiFi in Power Saving mode it finds and seems
to connect to my wireless router but then hangs when trying
to connect to any web site or to my e-mail provider. This
may also be a router issue, but a "cancel" button would have
been nice for a hung WiFi connection. All I could do before
I found that the problem was Power Saving mode was to do a
    warm reset.

I would like to have Home (Applications) icon on the row at
the bottom of the screen that is always there, instead of
    only on the Graffiti screen.

Like others, I find I have to sometimes press a button twice
to wake up the T|X. Even the power button.

The new power connector seems to be much more fragile than
the simple barrel connector used on my Tungsten E, and, of
course, makes it impossible to use generic adapters.

The universal voltage adapter that comes with the cradle kit
has a big cylindrical ferrite EMI filter on the end of the
cable that connects to the T|X or the cradle that is both
large enough and perfectly positioned to interfere with the
rear support on the cradle, effectively preventing the
cradle from sitting flat on my desk when using this adapter.
Go figure! If Palm sends me a new 120-volt only adapter
that does not overheat I can use that one at my desk. 9That
adapter does not have the filter, perhaps because it uses a
series-pass regulator instead of a switching regulator,
which is also why mine gets so hot. If the new adapter
still overheats, I will have to remove the ferrite filter
from the universal voltage adapter; an easy job with pair of
    pliers.

I purchased a Palm HotSync cable with the T|X before I
realized that I could not really charge the T|X through the
data port and really needed a different Palm HotSync cable,
the one that has with the cradle kit, that has both the data
and power connectors. Why does Palm even sell a USB HotSync
cable that has only the data connection?

Finally, I would like to have an easily replaceable battery,
though I know that an external battery pack goes a long way
to providing the same, or perhaps better, functionality.

Actually, the Palm still trickle charges (but the charge indicator
doesn't show this) -- The reason is simple, the Palm needs more then
500mA when charging, and the USB specs don't allow the Palm to draw more
    then 500mA.

    Go to
At the bottom of that page is a free hack.

I use MegaLauncher, which does that also.

That power button is a pain, being that it is recessed slightly. Poor
    design there!

I just use the included power adapter & Hot Sync via BT. I haven't
even opened up the supplied cab;e package.

From the screenshot, it's at the cost of the WiFi icon -- That doesn't
    sound handy

Why do they call it your "bottom", when it's really in the middle of your body?

After downloading, that is not the case -- You can either replace the
"Find" button (and it adds alternate "Find" support), or replace the
    write-on-screen button.

Its the reverse on my T|X. When I use the HotSync only
cable on a powered USB port the battery indicator changes to
the "charging" icon, but after 1 1/2 hours the battery
condition has increased only slightly. Using a USB HotSync
cable with the additional power connector on the Palm end
and the same USB port on the same laptop as the power
source, the T|X will full charge in less than 1/2 hour.

Did you turn off the Palm? It barely draws enough power to run the
Palm, but if it's off it should charge.

    Yes, the TX was off.

  10. Re: Palm T|X Issues

Your long list of TX issues is very legitimate. I am bothered by most of those
too. If there were a better Palm, I'd be happy to switch. Since there isn't,
I force myself to be happy with the TX. /PaulN

No - it replaces the Find icon on the far left.
