That problem was reported, long ago, but no resolution has been found.
It is strictly cosmetic, and has no effect on system operation. That
same problem existed in OS/2, at one time, and was fixed, somewhere
along the line, but it also seems that XWorkplace, and eWorkplace,
also have a similar problem. The OS/2 problem was the result of some
defect in the compiler that was being used. I am not sure what the
problem is in XWorkplace, and eWorkplace (probably the ame thing).
Hope this helps...

Doug,
I was checking Google groups and even found one of my old posts from 5
years ago. Same problem. I think when I installed Dani 1.7.6 it started.
I also noticed that ide10161.zip was downloaded at the same time.

As a follow-up, here is what I am seeing:
1. When I click on a file that is not associated and opens with ae I see
the file size problem.
2. If I refresh the window the file size goes back to normal.
Is there a way to set the default way to open a file if it is not
associated with a program to run it?

BIG SNIP
I am pretty sure that the IBM problem got fixed, and Dani has nothing
to do with it. I am also pretty sure that it is a flaw in eWorkplace
(and probably XWorkplace too), likely caused by the same flaw that
caused the IBM problem. Any updates are purely coincidental to seeing
the problem, it has been around for a long time.

The incorrect display is purely coincidental.

I recently saw it with XWP 1.0.5 on my W4 FP16 system, after downloading a
file of a few 100kB and then opening its the WPS folder.
I got an insane file size somewhere in the multi (tens of) GB range, I think.
I think it was shown this way in the 'detailed view' while the XWP (or is it
actually from WPS Wizard?) status line info was correct I think also the
tooltip info (but I'm not perfectly sure about the latter anymore).
After a restart of the WPS? or the system, the file's size then appears correct.

Same Problem sometimes here on ecs 1.14 on ecs hpfs system partion,
even with sizes of many files in details-view. opening settings
notebook of (each!) file and closing settings notebook resets to
correct filesize.

Ok, the problem while coincidental was driving me up the wall. I
backtracked to come up with what I might have done to cause this...
It started happening about the time I installed "FM/2 File Manager
v3.04", so I uninstalled it and haven't seen the problem again. I will
run for a day to see if it comes up again.
Could it be an interaction with FM/2 and bootableJFS?

Sometimes, I go for a couple of months, without seeing the problem. At
other times, it happens 20 times in an hour. It is strictly cosmetic,
and has no ill effects, except on the eyes. As for what triggers it? I
have no idea. I do know that it has nothing to do with either FM/2, or
bootable JFS, because it was happening, long before I installed either
one. It does seem to be some fault in eWorkplace.

Well, I guess you are right. Maybe I will just install 1.0.5... I kind
of miss some of the full xworkplace features.

I thought it was a compiler bug in the compiler that IBM used to write the
WPS.

What evidence do you have for this? That is a standard Details view and
has absolutely nothing to do with XWP as far as I'm aware.

Oh, puh-lease. If you think that has any influence on the problem, you
are sorely misguided.

Paul,
I would say you are correct. I have *no* idea what is causing it. I do
remember a problem like it from 2001, but I don't think this is related.
Maybe it is nothing to worry about, but I open my drives in details view
and it bugs the **** out of me.
I don't understand why is ok and one day it just happens. Any ideas
Paul? I run unimaint, cleanini, and checkini regular. After watching for
a couple days it is kind of like this:
If the actual file size is 1749 it will end up either like:
17,48.999,999,999,999...
or
17,49.000,000,000,000,000,xxx
The commas can be different places - random. So Paul, any ideas?

Ok Paul,
I believe you. Not dani and not xworkplace -
http://www.mgreene.org/tmp/scr090406.jpg
In this screen shot I clicked on config.sys.1, it opened in ae, and I
closed it. I did the same to config.sys.2, config.sys.3, and
config.sys.4 then took this screen capture. I then selected the window
and pressed F5, everything went to normal. The correct size of the
displayed files: 11,139, 11,009, 11,896, and 11,896.

Could be. I'm always suspected is was a case of some race condition
stomping on the floating point stack. I don't know this for sure, but
I've always suspected that the WPS file size calculations were done in
floating point to allow for large file support. CSet/2 and VAC3.0 don't
support _longlong and I don't think WPS development was ever done with
VAC3.65.

The file size display problem being discussed in this thread appears essentially
identical to a problem originally reported by tjerick on 2000/12/18 on
comp.os.os2.bugs in a thread entitled "Another MCP bug". As I and others
reported at the time it had nothing to do with MCP. The problem could also be
reproduced on ACP and Warp4. According to a message from Scott, it was a minor
WPS bug and was scheduled to be fixed in FP3 for MCP/ACP and FP16 for Warp4. As
Paul Ratcliffe has correctly stated it had something to do with the C compiler
or its runtime being used by IBM at the time. I was able to reproduce the
problem at the time but cannot do so now and have not seen it since installing
the fixpacks mentioned by Scott.
As to why the problem may appear to come and go on a particular system, perhaps
the people seeing this have more than one version of the relevant DLL in
different directories and system behavior depends on subtleties such as the
exact order in which certain operations are done, what directory they happen to
be running from, whether beginlibpath has been set, or some such thing.

It's listed in the readme for xr_c005 as being fixed in xr_c001.

It was, according to posts made by those who knew about the problem,
at the time.

Then, maybe IBM missed something, but I would think that it is more
likely, that somebody else is using the same buggy compiler. Now what
program just happens to be involved with displaying some of that stuff
today???
