The way to figure out the error details without having to go to the code would
have been to use the errstr program:

openssl errstr 0D0C50A1


        error:0D0C50A1:asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_item_verify:unknown message digest
algorithm

It is most likely that you are missing a call to OpenSSL_add_all_algorithms() in
your code - not all algorithms are available by default - so this call pulls in

everything and should resolve the issue.
