I don't know it too. But winscp (in wine) works (probably it's not so strict).

Here are commands (openssh 4.6p1):
sftp> ls .
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Can't ls: "flash:/." not found
sftp> ls /
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Can't ls: "/" not found

But 'ls *' is interesting ! (number of stat lines is equal to number of files in
switch):
sftp> ls *
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Can't ls: "flash:/*" not found
sftp> mkdir aaa
sftp> ls *
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Couldn't stat remote file: Operation unsupported
Can't ls: "flash:/*" not found
