nfs destroyed my files... HELP!!
I have a home network connected via 802.11b to a cable router hooked into
the world. One is a home-built desktop box on a 133 bus, 1GB RAM, 2 40GB HDDs. The
other is a Micron Transport ZX notebook. Both operate on RH8, 2.4.18-14. The
desktop serves NFS [cat /etc/exports = /mnt/hd2/toons/mp3
micron(rw,root_squash)]. The microns mounts "desktop:/mnt/hd2/toons/mp3
/nfs nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr"
I bought myself a new stereo with W.A.T (Wireless Audio Transfer) for Xmas
the other day and I played a few songs on the micron (XMMS). When I
logged out and shutdown the Micron, the logout messages reported no
errors, but the hdd on the desktop was thrashing for a moment. The next
morning when I did an "ls /mnt/hd2/toons/mp3" it replied "0 files" !! :((
An examination of "var log messages reported nothing funny when the micron
umounted the file system at shutdown, logdump for the relevant times on

Can anybody figure out what might have happened? I've googled this to
death with no joy. Are there any other log files that need to be
examined? Did I export/mount the files correctly? Is it possible the files still exist somewhere (ext3)? Any advice appreciated
as well as tips on how to avoid this in the future would be great.
PS: Is it better to create links to the files (in a separate directory)
and then export/mount the separate directory? Inquiring minds want to
