    ipchains is deprecated and replaced by netfilter (iptables)
    if you still have it on your system ask yourself if you really still
    want to run a
    2.2.x kernel or lower

    That depends on what you mean by "the Internet." Sadly, most people
    mean the web (tcp/80 and tcp/443). For that you need a browser of some
    sort.

    Otherwise, you need to be able to configure an IP address on some
    interface your kernel can handle and set a default route. net-tools can
    do both for you.

    You do not have to configure ipchains/iptables at all for functionality,
    although generally you should for security.
