  1. Wireless and Ubuntu 7.04

As a new convert to Linux, I am enjoying the stability and the
openness of the environment. It was even more of a joy to get it to
function on a laptop that is lightweight.

The only issue I have been experiencing is my wireless will not grab
anything. It's an Intel 2200 BG chipset and regardless of network, WPA/
WEP, etc., it simply won't "go".

I've tried various avenues to get this to work, and so far, I've come
up empty-handed. When I perform iwlist scanning I receive "no scan
results" for eth1, which seems to have associated itself with my
wireless card. Furthermore in Network Tools I see a loopback address
for my wireless card in eth1/avahi but not in eth1.

I have upgrade wpa_supplicant to the latest version.

    Any tips? Thanks in advance.

The driver for your wireless device is called iw2200 and it has been in Linux for a very long time
and it should work. It is probably something small.

Whenever you have a problem with anything that might be kernel related, including drivers, you
should always consult the output produced by the 'dmesg' command. If you find something you don't
understand, you should post the appropriate section here.

The kill switch is of particular notice to me

  5. Re: Wireless and Ubuntu 7.04

I performed a cat command and it shows my switch being in the right
    position when on (0 resulted).

Do I need to add any lines to this?

    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    #auto ath0
    iface ath0 inet dhcp

    #auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet dhcp

    auto eth1
    iface eth1 inet dhcp
    wireless-essid candyland
    wireless-mode managed
    wireless-channel 8
    wireless-key
    13fb3a9c02ea7722768b26fee0fbad7b5c91b99875f2266c4e 05bcee47b03230

For some reason, it sees my wireless card as eth1 and not wlan0.

Furthermore the network is WPA-PSK2, which maybe an issue.

That is controlled by renaming rules run by udev. My openSUSE 10.2 system names the wireless devices
    as ethX, not wlanX.

Because the driver cares about the hardware switch, so do you. With that switch in the off position,
you will get no scans. With it on, do you get any AP's listed with an 'iwlist s'?

If you plan to use WPA2, you will need to set up a proper configuration file for wpa_supplicant, or
use NetworkManager if Ubuntu 7.04 has it.

I suggest that you move your questions to the Ubuntu Forums, as they will be much more familiar with
the specific details needed for your system.

    dwayne,

Do you still have a problem with this issue?

Have you found the "RF Kill" switch on your laptop and turned it off like
the message in your log states?

What kind of laptop have you? Have you read the laptop instruction manual?
There is probably a button or switch for the RF transmitter which the
    instructions will show location of.
