Thread: Can't access single site, other sites OK

  1. Can't access single site, other sites OK

My company has a small network which connects to broadband internet
    through a D-Link DSL-504 router.

The problem I'm having is I cannot access my company website (
www.no1buildingservices.co.uk ) from the office, however the site
works perfectly through any other internet connection.

Up until 1 week ago the site was working fine, but now when I try to
access it I get a 404 not found page. I can access every other site
I've tried, just not my own. Also I can access the said site on every
    other internet connection I've tried.

I cannot ping my own site, and a traceroute shows the following:

    Tracing route to www.no1buildingservices.co.uk [217.204.9.215]

I had hoped the problem would sort itself out before now but it

    Can anyone offer any suggestions?

    Hi Chay,

Did you or anyone else make any security changes to the site? Such as
ACL's. I am able to trace and connect to your site with no issue and
since it looks as if your site is being hosted by an outside source
this looks like a ACL issue or some other form of security problem.

    GG,

    Thanks for your help.

Yes you're right, the site is hosted externally.

I don't think any access control lists have been changed. Only me and
the web host have access to the site, and I havn't changed the ACL's.
How could I go about checking this?

The web host suggested that it was probably a DNS issue, but as typing
the IP address directly into my browser has the same effect as typing
in the full address I think I have ruled this out.

Do you think the problem is with my server, or with another server
"along the way"? I was inclined to think the latter as the site works
on other connections, and the trace route has problems at hop 13 where
217.204.31.170 dosn't seem to be forwarding.

    I'm open to any ideas.

    Cheers

    Chay

  4. Re: Can't access single site, other sites OK

    * This could be a routing advertisement issue. Routing advertisements are
sent out typically using BGP to upstream routers. If the hosting company has
more than one upstream connection then it is possible something is wrong
with their BGP announcements. The problem could be between your own
connection ISP's network and the Hosting Companies network. If your ISP's
network goes the wrong way (follows the wrong BGP path announcement) they
could end up in a dead-end ... where a router in that path doesn't know how
to (or refuses to get to) the destination.

Some things don't get sorted out until someone makes a report (complaint)
that a problem exists. Your ISP's NOC should be able to test this from their
offices from system routers. That should get the ball rolling, then they
should be able to escalate it to their backbone provider, and on to the
Hosting Providers network (and transit networks) if necessary.

Good Luck. Here is the path from Bellsouth.net in South Florida...
