ADSL modem / Cabling issues
I have a Linksys ADSLME1 and I pre-wired 50 feet of 5e Patch cable in
my home. I tried connecting everything and could not get a connection.
Thinking I had a bad cable, I tried a second 5e cable of the same
length and still no luck. I did not make the cables, I bought 50 ft
Belkin cables from Staples. I then ran a phone cable accross the room
connected the ADSL modem and used the supplied 7ft type 5 patch cable
(not 5e) and got a positive connection. Does anyone know if my modem
type has a problem with type 5e Patch cable or is there some other
issues that I am missing.
Please Help

Re: ADSL modem / Cabling issues
Ron - Does your pre-wired 50ft run of 5e cable include wall jacks? If so,
how were they wired? Sounds like you have a wiring issue. Do a google
search on 568A and 568B wiring schemes. Check the pin assignments at your
jacks and with the patchcable you bought.

Re: ADSL modem / Cabling issues
My Pre-wiring is not that sophisticated. I didn't install network wall
jacks. I just ran the cable up through my ceiling and down the wall. I
am using the pre-installed jacks that came on the cable from Belkin.
When I detected the connection issue, I used the other cable (loose
cable not run through ceiling and down the walls) and hooked one end
to ADSL modem and the other to my PC. Still "LAN link" light did not
illuminate.
Thanks

Re: ADSL modem / Cabling issues
You didn't get crossover cables did you? From what you describe, it should
work but the symptoms sound like a wiring connection problem.

Re: ADSL modem / Cabling issues
I reckon the 7' supplied is a cross-over. When you replaced it with patch
cables it caused the problem you identified. Take your big patch cable back
to staples and ask for a crossover instead. I bet it works.
