    hi,
    ports are open to communicate with others systems, like if you open
    and web page then your pc need to open one port that must be 8000 or
    8080 to communicate with web server.
    if you need further help then try to fine on linux's web page there
    should be some good links about these things. and about telnet there
    is lots of software with good gui you can use them in windows mode.

    how i understand it is that the port is like a door to a computer, you
    know the address but you must open a door, when you use the ip and the
    port in the form of 192.168.0.1:8080 then you establish communication,
    that line of communication is called a socket.
