| I'm embarrassed to admit that I've asked this question before, got an answer to fix it, now it's broken again and I can't find that topic here any longer and of course don't remember what fixed it. This is Firefox 2, latest version, 2.0.0.16 I think. The results of a search when using that toolbar used to display in a new tab. Now it doesn't, and just replaces the content that's presently on the screen. What did I do and how do I undo it? |

Search all messages posted by you for a keyword you used in your previous posting. You can do this by clicking on your profile and then search from the search bar within it. JB |

Type/copy browser.search.openintab into the Filter box. Double-click the pref to toggle the value to true if it's false. (This pref set to true works in 2.0.0.16, but the search go button is broken in Fx3 and doesn't work with the pref set to true) Or perhaps you have a tab or search extension and need changing its options? -- Rom |

Thanks. That did it. I have a vague recollection of using that config tool once before, but the defaults are in general good enough for me, so I don't mess with it, and hence don't remember what might be there to look for. I suspect that "openintab" was the default setting in the first version of Firefox that I used that had that search bar, so I just got used to that mode of operation. Miles, I have so many little notes like this scattered all over the place, though I generally don't save things that I don't expect to need to use again (like this one). What I really need to save, and I'll think about how to save it so I'll remember it, is the "about:config" thing, how to access it, and what might be there to look for if I have a problem again that might be a default setting that's not accessible from a menu. Fox, I did try searching for my previous post but didn't find it. Probably too old and it dropped into the bit bucket. |

When you click (i.e. with the mouse) on the search button (i.e. button with the magnifying glass), FF3 doesn't open a new tab. It does, however, when you middle-click the search button. This seems to be consistent with other click/middle-click behavior (on links, bookmarks, etc.) -- at least on the Windows platform; don't know how middle-click behaves on Mac and other systems. You can even control if the new tab gets focussed or not. Holding the Shift-key while middle-clicking the search button causes the new tab to be loaded in background (while you stay on the current tab). When you middle-click the button without holding modifier keys, the new tab will show immediately. -- Regards, Roland |

Google has group postings going back 20 years. I did a few quick searches of your postings for likely terms you would have used and likewise could not find an older thread by you on this topic. I'm assuming your email address has not changed in this group? Perhaps your previous posting was to another group? Not that it matters that much. Just wondering because searchable archives is one of the benefits to these groups. Avoids having to repeat the same trouble shooting steps each time a previously answered question is posted to the list. Simply refer the person to the archived answer instead. Oh well, you got an answer to your problems so that's the main thing. JB |

Okay, and I assume when set to false (the default) the enter-key would open in the current tab? IAC, that's not (using) the search go button. > When you click (i.e. with the mouse) on the search button (i.e. button > with the magnifying glass), FF3 doesn't open a new tab. Yep, and that works in 2.0.0.16, but what is broken and doesn't work in Fx3 with browser.search.openintab set to true. Clicking or tapping (say with a mouse, touchpad or pen) a button is the normal usage of a button, and not: > It does, > however, when you middle-click the search button. That would work without browser.search.openintab set to true though, and also assumes one is using an input device with middle-click (button) and assigned to middle-click. Not all notebooks, mice, touchpads or pens even have a middle(-click) button. Surely the pref isn't only meant for the keyboard/enter-key! > This seems to be > consistent with other click/middle-click behavior (on links, bookmarks, > etc.) -- at least on the Windows platform; Links and bookmarks are not *buttons*. Middle-clicking doesn't work with most buttons in Fx, and not in IE7, IE8 Beta 2 or Opera 9.52. IMO, Fx is still very deficient in 'basic' tab (opening) options, and relies on *compatible* extensions to take up the slack, but there's hardly any extensions for the 'basic' tab (opening) options in Fx3. Opera 9.52 has the option "Reuse current tab When you open an item from the panels, such as a bookmark, the default action is to open the document in the current tab. If you prefer such items to be opened in a new tab, uncheck "Reuse current tab"." That pref unchecked works with the "Go" button (added to the RHS of the search bar on the toolbar), and for bookmarks everywhere. Unfortunately, it doesn't also work for URLs in the address bar. As that Opera pref mentioned bookmarks: It's simple to open bookmarks in IE7 and IE8 Beta 2 (from its sidebar) by using the blue arrow (button), but afaik there's no pref or button to open a new tab from search, and don't think it's supported as even the IE7Pro option for it doesn't work in Vista (32/64-bit). IE8 Beta 2 has the beginnings of opening URLs in a new tab from the address bar drop-down extender thingy, but IMO it would be better and consistent to use the same blue arrow (button) approach from the bookmarks (sidebar). > You can even control if the new tab gets focussed or not. I, for one, don't use a keyboard nor use keyboard shortcuts or modifiers keys in combination with a mouse, pen, touchpad or other (non-keyboard) input device. -- Rom |

Hm, I wrote I don't use a keyboard and now two replies with keyboard shortcuts. > If the earlier comment was a refusal to use Keyboard and Mouse shortcuts > then you might try one of these. Why not read and reply to the post and text of the poster you're referring to? If it's my comment of *not using a keyboard* etc., it's because I use a tablet and pen with my Vista desktop and Vista has Tablet support, which includes such things as pen flicks and TIP to name a couple, and use some of the accessibility features in Vista. I also use extensions and customisations in Fx3 for navigation, efficiency and usability. The extension for TIP support doesn't work everywhere in Fx3, but may be redundant with bug 88831 and support in 3.1. My usage choices and preferences are hardly a "refusal". -- Rom |
