Thread: Using WS_FTP with Linux?

  1. Using WS_FTP with Linux?

    Hi Experts,

I am using WS_FTP32 with a Linux server and I
can't find any way to create folders. The MkDir
button always worked for me for Windows - Windows
    connections but
it is now greyed out but only on the Linux side.

I have no problems uploading files to the root of
the server. How to create folders on Linux
    without using this MkDir button?

    TIA

    Give FileZilla a try:

I'm using FireFTP in Fedora 8 Linux. I can make dirs with that one.

Because he's trying to do it in FF.

Huh? He's trying to do it in WS_FTP32 and he even said so! Weren't you
    paying any attention?

Try this: Start a command window. Type ftp and return. After
supplying your username and password cd to the directory where you want
to create the directory. Type mkdir . Observe the error
message. Report back to us. Methinks you simply don't have permissions
to make directories nor probably files in the directory you are in.

(Why people insist on using a GUI which really hides what's going on
when they already have the tools they need in command line form is
beyond me. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the dreaded command
line and I can't tell you how much people waste their time by avoiding it!)

Presumably, the server configuration allows directory creation (it can
    be turned off).

Yes I am, but you will note that FileZilla is also available for Linux,
    among others.

Good, then I will try that one. I did download and
extract FileZilla but I think it is far too large
and it bawled for another file. WS_FTP is only a
very small fraction of its size.

I tried to download FireFTP it but it is not
    compatible with my FF 2.x

BTW, I have to apologize to everyone. I had
intended to put this in alt.comp.freeware.
