Thread: How do I undo Firefox as my default browser?

  1. How do I undo Firefox as my default browser?

    All,
I just installed Firefox on my work machine (love it so much more than
IE.) I checked the option for Firefox to be my default browser,
however I need to undo this as there are many applications within my
company that must be done only in Firefox, so unfortunately I need IE
to be my default browser and not Firefox. I can not find anywhere how
I can undo this setting. I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.14 on Windows XP
    Professional.

    Thanks.

..... I may have to have IE as my default browser for work things, but
I'll always use Firefox for my Internet browsing

Just set the other browser as the default. Uncheck Firefox's checking
to see if it is the default.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that IE has that option now grayed out
for me so I can't set it to default (that was the first thing I
tried.) I've unchecked the box for Firefox always checking if it is
    the default browser.

I uninstalled Firefox and then reinstalled. That didn't fix it. In
fact, when I reinstalled Firefox all my favorites were there, etc. So
clearly when I uninstalled not everything got erased from the
    computer. Discouraging.

Is this a registry issue? I know nothing about going into the
    registry to do things....

If you are using WinXP, try this

Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults

Then, expand the "Custom" list. From there, you can set the default Web
    browser.

    Hope this can help.

You can also set the default by going to the Add/Remove programs dialog
    and selecting 'set program defaults'.

Unfortunately, I don't see Set Program Access and Defaults when I go
    to Add or Remove Programs.

    Ahhh, another convert to Firefox

Alternate directions for Windows XP if the first didn't work
In Windows XP, if using the Control Panel "Category View": Click on "Performance and Maintenance". Then, click on "File Types" in
the left column under the heading "See Also".

See the topic "Setting default browser manually" in the following
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Setting_Your_Default_Browser
in your case in the alternate directions within the topic

There is no option from Add/Remove window for "set default
    programs'. :-(

Ok, so in the file types I changed .html and .htm to open in IE. Now
I have an instance where someone at work sent me an email with a URL
shortcut in it to one of our internal web pages and that wants to
launch in Firefox. So I changed the url file type to IE and that
    didn't take care of it.

Oh, Firefox! I love ye, but I need to undo that default browser
setting and you've made it so complicated. I promise you Firefox you
are most certainly my default browser on my personal machine.

Start up Internet Explorer. Go to Tools -> Internet Options. Go to the
Programs tab and look at the bottom of the page. There is a box
marked "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default
browser" check that box, click OK, and close IE. Reopen IE and you
will be asked if you want IE to be your default browser. Say OK and it
is then your default browser. This will remain so until you do roughly
    the same thing with Firefox.

I tried that, but that option is totally grayed out, so I can't check
    that box.

YAY! I got it to work. I had a lot of manual things to change, but I
    think I've finally fixed it.

    Thanks for your directions.

Either something in Control Panel is set to limit access to IE, or
something has altered the registry to have the default browser option
greyed out in IE. Either way, the problem is in the registry. You should
go to a Microsoft or IE discussion group as seek help there. You will
get the problem solved much more quickly.
