RC2 Size Problem SOLVED
Starting a new thread to get this out of the original RC2 announcement.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
RC2 installed on my Vista HP machine with HUGE (about twice normal)
font, icon, etc., sizes relative to RC1. After trying everything I could
think of (re-d/l, safe mode, new profile, etc.), I FINALLY found the
problem:
Contrary to all versions in recorded history, RC2 lays user made Windows
font size (DPI) adjustments ON TOP OF the Firefox user set Font and
Color options.
The Windows default dpi setting on my 1920x1200 display is 96, too small
for my tired old eyes. I set it to 150%, which results in 144 dpi.
My previous Firefox settings were 26/24/18. By halving them on RC2 to
13/12/9, text looks about the same as before, once I remembered to
CTRL+0 any size changes made for individual sites (a great new 3.0
feature).
Unless I'm missing something, this IS NOT an improvement. It undoubtedly
will result in incredible screaming from 99% of those who have made, or
have had made, dpi adjustments. They're not likely to spend several
hours, or have the ability, to figure out what happened. BAD MOVE!!!

Must be something in Vista. Didn't observe that problem with WinXP.

Hi, Ron - Are you using a custom (large) dpi setting in XP?
In any event, it's something the developers did between RC1 and RC2,
since the problem doesn't exist in RC1. I've returned to RC1, since
while I can finagle the text size in RC2, the toolbars, icons, etc.
remain huge, taking up way too much real estate.

Not currently. I have in the past, but for this monitor/display card, I
am using the default 96dpi.

I don't see that in Vista!

I disagree. I am able to reproduce the problem 100% on WinXP SP2
with both RC2 and RC3 of Firefox 3.0 US-English version. Just like
Cal,
I also have my DPI set to 150% (144 DPI the dialog says).
But I don't know how to apply Cal's solution... what property in
about:config do you need to add to specify that "13/12/9" setting?
Thanks for your consideration.

Laid on RC3 this morning, saw it had the same problem as above, and
screwed around some more with Windows and FF settings. Conclusions:
- Windows dpi setting of up to at least 140% eliminates the problem
(150% still has it)!!
- Since 140% was OK, I was able to go back to 26/24/18 in FF.
- Change to 140% made FF menu, toolbar, etc., text smaller than I
prefer. The following change to userChrome.css got everything back to
about what I was used to in RC1 and prior:
/* Change Browser Fonts */
* { font-size: 10pt !important;
font-family: Arial !important; }

Thanks, Suraj - see my recent reply; no need to use 13/2/9 (the settings
are in tools, options, content, fonts and colors: advanced).

The problem also occurs with the official US-English 3.0 release under
Windows XP SP2 with 144 DPI.

I tried a different approach (changing the DPI settings) and found a
very interesting phenomenon:
The problem (huge fonts + images + menus + toolbars) occurs only
occurs when the DPI is 144 or greater.
As a temporary workaround, I set my DPI to 143 (149% in the dialog)
and the problem did not occur.
Nevertheless, this is indeed a bug that needs further investigation.
Should I file a new bug on bugzilla about this?

A bug is already on file for the font sizing as there are different
behaviors between Linux, OS X, and Windows.

Ah, could you please provide the number/id for that bug? I would like
to track its discussion and progress.
Thanks.

I'd suggest filing a new bug. 439714 doesn't seem to really understand
what's going on, and a "fix" in it is a disaster, requiring a manual
edit of prefs.js to restore as I mentioned in the Huge Fonts in FF3 thread.

FWIW, that bug is request for a knowledge base article, not the software
bug report.

I wasn't aware it was a Bug. I thought it was just supposed to be that way.
