keyconfig replacement for Fx3
I'm looking for a replacement for the "keyconfig"[1] extension for Firefox
that will work with the 3.0 version.
The keyconfig extension seems to be abandoned since 2004 or 2005, and even
barelly works with Fx 2.0
My requirements from keyconfig are:
- Map my Backward/Forward buttons to switch prev/next tab. I can set the
buttons to generate either XF86Back/XF86Forward or F19/F20.
[2] these buttons.
- Map ctrl + cyrillic-T to "open new tab", since I'm often working in the
macedonian cyrillic keyboard layout...
OOOPS, nevermind, this bug has been solved in Fx3

You can find a link to the current keyconfig and its support thread at
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=72994.
keyconfig 20060828.1 works great in Fx 2.0.0.12 and I hear it also
works with the Fx 3 development builds. You might need to disable
compatibility and secure update checking to get Fx 3 to allow it to
install.
P.S. I don't think the extensionroom is a very good source anymore.

Yeah, I use that version in 2.0 and sometimes it decides to disable itself
in 2.0 and then to re-enable itself.
It doesn't work in Fx3 (compatibility check disabled).

I had to google for the url, and that was the first I found.
Obviously I did know that forums page, sinceI have that version

That's because dorando doesn't update the compatibility info until
*after* each minor update of Firefox. It does sound like a pain for
some people. That's why I've turned off the extension manager's
compatibility checking. (Or you could use the MR Tech Local Install
extension to make it compatible. That's what a lot of other people
do.)

Then you should have known that it hasn't been abandoned, the most
recent version was released less than two years ago, and that dorando
still actively supports it.
Hope this helps.

It does *not* work for me in Firefox version 3 Nightly nor do I think
it worked in any Version 3 build. I get the window but with nothing in it.
I tend to think Dorando's concept of how often to normally update is more
reasonable, especially for him, but it is not Mozilla's idea of active support.
Most single purpose extensions written properly do not need babysitting.
Version 3 has made major changes bookmarking, history don't know if that
in itself should have any effect but something has certainly changed as is not working
for me as I said in Vers 3. And it is a critical extension to help get extensions to not
conflict with one another, I can at least check usages in FF 2.0.0.12 but
that is only works if I've not added much in FF vers 3.
I do get these messages in comments at the top of keyconfig:
Bug 174320 - When an event handler removes itself the next...
Index of / - Minefield - 3.0b5pre - Build 20080320...
Keyconfig
and bug: 174320 was indicated that it was fixed in Firefox 1.1
and the word "listener" is used in 174320 and that has come up
a few times.
Anyway the place to get his extension is at his site, which consists of
a page with just the xpi's. http://mozilla.dorando.at/

It works for 2.0.0.12 not for version 3.

Apparently the *major* changes didn't break keyconfig. dorando
explained last June why the unmodified keyconfig doesn't work in the
current Fx 3 in this posting:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewto...923606#2923606.
According to dorando: "It seems that in current trunk the
"app-startup" doesn't fire". I made the small change he suggested and
keyconfig works for me in the latest Fx 3 nightly build.
I hope this is helpful to the OP or anyone else who is looking for a
keyconfig that works in Fx 3. It took me only a minute to make the
change dorando suggested.

I made the change, certainly more than a minute, unless you mean select
the line and paste over it. That part went quickly, testing took much longer.
Not only did the Jun Tue 12th 2007 3:25am change not work, it prevented
seeing anything happen at all, no keyconfig window, in fact it prevented
SpaceBar, PageUp and PageDn from scrolling in Firefox as well.
Backed off the change and back to what I indicated before a basically
empty keyconfig window.

I verified that the keyconfig window came up with the key bindings
displayed. I remapped Close Tab to F12 and Undo Close Tab to Ctrl-F12
and verified that the change worked. Firefox seems to work normally,
including scrolling with SpaceBar, PageUp and PageDn.
How frustrating this must be for you, David! Have you previously
installed the modified version of keyconfig by onemen? That's known
to prevent dorando's current version from working. Or maybe an
extension conflict? I'm testing with a brand new clean profile with
no other extensions installed.

Hi Alan,
Yes it was frustrating, and I wonder if after applying the Jun, 2007
update to fix the empty display in
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewto...923606#2923606
that I had tried Tools, keyconfig instead of Ctrl+Shift+F12,
if it would have worked then.
Instead I did test with a new profile, which worked (yes it worked),
then disabled every extension in my profile used with Minefield, and
no luck. Renamed the the three extensions files (not the log) in profile
and still no luck, disabled the dozen extensions I had disabled that
were reenabled with the deletions, then tried it from the Tools menu
instead of the shortcut and that worked.
Had one extension that listed as disabled in my listing, would not disable,
from Tools addons, but it did disappear after the file deletions and that
was "Dom Inspector", seems weird. Guess it really wasn't there.

Re: keyconfig replacement for Fx3
Besides losing the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+F12) or "keyconfig"
extension, I also lost the keyboard shortcut now for "QuickRestart"
extension. Both are available on the Tools menu, so I guess ...
I'm slightly ahead since I can still use both, though I really really miss
the QuickRestart keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+R)
The loss of the Quick Restart keyboard shortcut is a result of the
"keyconfig" extension because I regain it, upon disabling "keyconfig".
Another change to Firefox Ver 3 ? The Choice of Restarting
had been permanently added to the Tools, Addons, but is
now no longer there in Minefield.
