Search engine ads projected to lose ground

Framingham (MA) - Though search advertising is expected to retain its
#1 position in the market of online ads, research firm IDC says it
will slowly lose market share over the next five years.
Internet advertising saw about $16.9 billion in revenue last year, and
IDC says that in 2011 that amount will grow to $31.3 billion, an
increase of 13.5%. Emerging forms of digital advertisement will eat
up a lot of that growth, leaving search advertising to drop in market
share from 40% in 2006 to 32% in 2011.
IDC says this could cause problems for Google, which relies on search
advertising for more than 99% of its income. The firm says online
video ads are quickly becoming more appealing to advertisers, as
broadband penetration increases. Streaming video advertising catches
viewers more easily, too, as most streaming players prevent users from
skipping sponsored ad messages.
IDC predicts that search advertising will still continue to grow in
terms of absolute dollar values, but more advanced advertising areas
like video will grow more quickly.

I don't know about "soon", right now would be good.
I'd like some way of turning things on and off like the way
Opera does it, by a simple F12 popup menu, and this would be
great if customising what content you load, on an "as you
go" basis, helped the surfer bypass turning their computer
into just another TV set for advertisers to flood with
flashy stuff.

Re: Firefox will need a switch to turn off video ads soon (to do list ?)
The thing is, I sort of prefer the text adds. Some of the flash ads
and the video ads are just thrown at you. I can tolerate ads being at
the front or end (preferable not both) of streamed videos, but if a
video is being played when I'm reading an article, I guess I'm going
to have to have my speakers and volume off 99% of the time. And also
the video would cripple the rest of the page I'm looking at.
I've run into some flash ads or ones that are like "pop-ins" without a
window. And so even after the little ad seems to have played and is
gone, I can't select the page that's behind it. I usually fix this by
refreshing the page but if the same stupid thing happens, I guess
there's not much I can do other than get mad. And maybe also complain
to the people that run the page for allowing such annoying ads. >:C

Disable autoplay! Thanks!!
And as for Flashblock. Best add-on ever made for anything ever,
anywhere!
I would use Firefox if only for this extension. It
should be the number 1 extension!!
