click on any torrent link , TB will ask you either to choose helper
application to handle torrent file or to save that file in hard disk.
select your choice and also check 'remember ...' option.
now goto Tools>Options>Content>File type>Manage , you will find any
'torrent' entry.
if you don't find any such entry even after choosing to remember your
choice ,
close FF.
goto FF profile folder "http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile#Firefox"
move this file from profile folder "mimeTypes.rdf"
start firefox , now try above mentioned method.

Thanks for that - but it doesn't work! Because the 'always do this' box
was ticked last time I changed the action, the dialogue box doesn't come
up. I went to the profiles folder and deleted the mimeTypes.rdf and
restarted but it still does the same thing (i.e. it downloads the
torrent file to disc instead of opening it with azureus which is what I
want and it used to do that.)And the downlaod action box in options is
still blank. Must be some kind of bug?

I think you have removed that file when FF is closed , right?
may be server is misconfigured , check what 'Content-Type' server sends
to FF using "http://web-sniffer.net/"

Yes FF was closed when I deleted it.
OK so I went to the websniffer and now I don't know what I'm doing. I
have gone past the boundaries of my knowledge.
Websniffer says:> HTTP Response Header

1st. have you pasted url of torrent file link ? seems like you have
pasted url of torrent site.
2nd. to make firefox to identify any file as torrent file , server has
to send proper mime type, "for example" this link
"http://torrents.bittorrent.com/spinart/36899010cc85bbdead125d9cb73767010c34b83e/Birdmonster.torrent"
sends "Content-Type: application/x-bittorrent"

Thanks for your patience.
OK, I get this:

'Content-Type:' isn't included in that info. if possible , can you post
that torrent link so that we can also check?

Ok here goes. As you may have gathered, I don't understand what I'm
doing at this point. I couldn't work out what 'torrent link' to feed to
web-sniffer; I made it up from the following info:
> Tracker: http://inferno.demonoid.com:3401/announce
> File hash: 7b12d31b16791340b84007f42c7ad38dfc6c924a
(i.e. I just added the file hash to the tracker URL).
If that is not what I'm supposed to be doing, you could go to the page
that comes from:
and get the right info from there...?
In any case I can't see why the FF download manager remains completely
blank.
Your help is much appreciated.
( sorry for this late response . Actually my isp has blocked any access
to that site )
here is a workaround :
Install this extension "https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4498"
goto Tools>Add-ons>Extension>Mime Edit>Preference>Edit>New type
