Thread: How to keep sigs in replies

  1. How to keep sigs in replies

When I read a message in news the anything below the "--" is in gray.
When I reply the sig is not shown. Well some sigs are good and / or I
just would like them to show.
Is there a setting I can change (and where) to alter this behavior?
Or, is there something I can do to alter this behavior on an individual
    basis?

    TIA

    Lou

The whole purpose of the signature separator (-- ) is that the signature
is only shown on the original posting and does not appear in any quoted
    postes that are subsequently made.

Sure, and very useful it is too, but sometimes it is desirable to
keep/quote some of the stuff below the separator as Lou says, and there
isn't a straightforward way of doing it :-(

And yet, it is possible, as you can see.

Highlight the sig, press Ctrl-C to copy it to the clipboard, and then in
your reply click on Edit > Paste As Quotation.

install any "quick phrase" application (I use Phrase Express -
    , but there are others)
mark and copy (to clipboard) the sig you want to keep
enter it into the quick-phrase app

    done!

I have done that, using AutoHotKey but was looking for a fix for a
phrase I just want to keep for the reply.

Interesting result. "Paste As Quotation" changes the "--" and anything
below so that TB treats it as part of the message by putting the ">" in
    front of each line.

BTW "Paste As Quotation" can be activated using Ctrl Shift V

    Thanks to Tarkis.

    The delimiter is "-- " (dash-dash-space), not merely "--" (dash-dash).

If you do go to bug #58406 as suggested by Steve, be sure to also read
the very short bug #425963 (cited with a link in comment #81 of #58406).

There have been some lengthy discussions of this in this newsgroup. See
the subject "Signatures and 'Double Dashes'"; no longer on the
news.mozilla.org server, you will have to search for this at Google.

While some claim there is a standard that requires "-- " for E-mail, the
only documented specification (RFC 3676) addresses newsgroup messages
but not E-mail. The response was that it is a de-facto, undocumented
standard for E-mail. However, those who have worked with standards
generally take the position that all standards must not only be
documented but also have consensus from both users and developers. For
E-mail, the use of "-- " has neither.

you can always "mark and copy" from the original... I understood though,
that you quasi wanted to "keep" the quotes!

Edit as new and add a "-" where the space goes in the sig, just as I
    have done.

    Those rare times: copy, paste.

Thanks, but "Paste As Quotation" as mentioned by Tarkus is more what I
had in mind (i.e. show the sig as part of the quoted message).

It's still there (all 140 posts, dated between 3/21/08 and
4/10/08). If you don't see it, it's because it's expired from your
    view of the group.

That might not be necessary, depending on his settings for the

Yes, sure, as I said several times, the "Paste As Quotation" option
mentioned by Tarkus works very well.
